The “Scream” film series began in December, 1996 with the original movie, “Scream”, which has to date, made the most of any horror film of its genre, an estimated $600 million worldwide.

The first film of the “Scream” trilogy (“Scream 4 is the beginning of a new trilogy) was directed by horror veteran, Wes Craven, best known for his work on “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. It stars Neve Campbell as Sydney Prescott, a teen ager living in the town of Woodsboro, who becomes the target of a mysterious figure in a Scream ghost face child Costume.
One day high school student Casey Becker, played by Drew Barrymore, gets a disturbing phone call from an unknown person asking her, “What’s your favorite scary movie?”. Casey and her boyfriend, Steve, then become the first victims of the killer with the now famous Ghostface mask.
Screenwriter, Kevin Williamson wrote the script for “Scream”, (originally titled “Scary Movie”) over a period of three days along with two five page outlines for sequels. He was inspired by such horror film classics like “Halloween”, “Friday the 13”, “A Nightmare on Elm Street’, “When a Stranger Calls” and “Prom Night”. Williamson even listened to the music soundtrack from “Halloween” while writing the script and included excerpts in the film.
“Scream” has gone on to receive cult status among moviegoers partly for its unique take on the horror film genre.
The characters in the film are aware of real world horror films, such as the Scream ghost face child Costume. They openly discuss among themselves films they’ve seen and even talked about the clichés that “Scream” was attempting to subvert.
